Bohemian Rhapsody
By Ronald Chesaux
The musical biopic Bohemian Rhapsody delves into the lives of Freddie Mercury and his bandmates musical career and rise to fame with his in the world famous and revolutionary rock group, Queen. And more personally, it explores both his struggle with his own sexuality, and and his struggle with AIDS.
The biggest problem I noticed was a divided focus. The directors couldn't seem to stick to one thing and the result was many unnecessary scenes, large pieces being simply glossed over and lots of the character’s actions having no effect on the plot. There were even a few times where I felt like I was watching a trailer. But, despite all that, there was one area that the movie excelled in: The concerts. Rami Malek perfectly captured Freddie Mercury’s stage persona in a way that makes you feel like you were actually in the audience. Malek’s fantastic performance was surely the highlight of the film.
So overall, if you’re interested in a thoughtful introspection into the life of Freddie Mercury and his fellow bandmates, i'm afraid that Bohemian Rhapsody is not the place to look. However, if immersive concert scenes and a simply fun experience is what you’re after, then it most certainly hits the mark.
