bird photos by aidan quinn

Aidan Quinn is a Sophomore at Montpelier High School.

"I love doing bird photography because not only do I like being outdoors, but I also love to capture the moment so I can look back on those photos and remember the cool experiences that I've had with nature. I've been into bird photography for around 5 years, but I only recently got a professional camera. Bird photography takes a bit of skill and patients and although it can be slow, the end result is always worth it.

"It makes me happy when I get a nice picture or find a specific bird that I've been looking for. Over the pandemic, I've had so much time to go on walks and find super cool birds right near my house. It's definitely a fun hobby that I would recommend, you don't even need any gear, you can just go on a walk in the woods and start to learn the local bird species and see how many you can find. Hope you enjoy my photos - you can find more at my Instagram account @aidanquinn.photography."

"A lot of Mornings during the summer I would wake up early and drive to Lake Champlain for sunrise, a big part of photography is the lighting of the picture, good lighting makes a photo more aesthetically pleasing. Here is a Caspian Tern hunting for a fish for breakfast at sunrise."

"This is a Female Pine Grosbeak, I took this shot two days ago right in the back parking lot of the high school in the berry trees right next to the entrance."

"This is a Young Barred Owl. I live right next to a pretty big chunk of forest and I often walk through it. Over the summer I had one of the coolest birding experiences in my life; I found a Barred Owl nest with two parents and two baby Owls. I went into the woods almost every day and I got to watch two young Owls be raised throughout a month, I even got to watch them learn how to fly. I was also able to take some of the best photos I ever took."

"One of my favorite birds is hummingbirds. I spent a lot of time photographing these little birds and they are so much fun to watch, here's a closeup of a hummingbird where you can really see the detail in the throat of the bird."

"This is a Snowy Owl, I saw this one two years ago in Massachusetts. It's a little early for them still but there are lots of them in Vermont over the winter."

"Here is a Hairy Woodpecker shot that I took over the fall with a beautiful orange tree in the background."

"This is a Northern Saw-Whet Owl, these little guys are tiny. We catch these and band them at North Branch Nature Center to study their migration patterns."
